Luxury Scent Box (LUXSB) is a subscription-based fragrance platform that allows members to discover designer fragrances and receive personalized monthly selections. I originally developed the platform on Drupal in 2015 and led a major rebuild in 2019. Since then, I have continued to architect, develop, and evolve the application across multiple Drupal generations and evolving business requirements.
At the core of LUXSB is a highly customized Drupal Commerce implementation supporting the complete subscription lifecycle. The platform initially relied on Drupal's contributed recurring billing ecosystem before I transitioned subscription management to Recurly, integrating its subscription and payment services directly with Drupal while maintaining a seamless experience for customers.
One of the platform's signature features is the Fragrance Calendar, which gives subscribers direct control over the fragrances they receive in upcoming months. I also developed an interactive Fragrance Survey backed by a proprietary recommendation algorithm that analyzes a customer's preferences and suggests fragrances they are likely to enjoy.
Beyond the customer-facing experience, LUXSB includes extensive operational tooling and integrations. ShipStation is integrated into the fulfillment workflow, while custom Drupal functionality supports order processing, shipping-label generation, subscription administration, and internal reporting. These tools allow much of the day-to-day operation of the subscription business to be managed from a centralized platform.
Over the years, maintaining LUXSB has also required solving challenges that extend well beyond traditional website development. I have implemented solutions for credit-card fraud mitigation, DDoS and application security, subscription synchronization, high-volume order fulfillment, automated label printing, administrative reporting, and long-term platform migrations.
The application has since been migrated to Drupal 10, with work underway to move the platform to Drupal 11. Maintaining LUXSB across multiple Drupal generations while preserving years of custom commerce functionality, integrations, customer data, and business processes has made the project an ongoing exercise in application architecture, modernization, and real-world e-commerce engineering.
