Backcountry Aero Club

Backcountry Aero Club is a nonprofit flying club and aviation community website built to serve both prospective members and the club's existing membership. As a member of the club myself, I had the opportunity to approach the project with a firsthand understanding of how the organization operates and the challenges that volunteer-run organizations face.

I built the platform using Drupal 10, with an upgrade to Drupal 11 underway. From the beginning, one of the primary architectural goals was long-term maintainability. Club leadership and volunteers naturally change over time, so the website needed to be intuitive enough that new administrators could understand how it works without inheriting years of unnecessary technical complexity.

To accomplish this, I established tightly controlled development and configuration standards and used the Bootstrap framework to create a distinctive, aviation-focused design without introducing excessive front-end dependencies or unnecessary complexity. The result is a lightweight, structured platform that can continue evolving as the organization changes.

The public-facing website places a significant emphasis on SEO and member recruitment, providing detailed information about the club, its aircraft, flying opportunities, aviation resources, and the surrounding community. Prospective members can apply directly through the website using a custom membership application system, while applicant and member information can be managed through an integrated CRM built directly within Drupal.

The platform also handles several important operational workflows for the club. A custom receipt management and reimbursement system allows members to submit fuel receipts and related documentation for processing, replacing what would otherwise be a fragmented administrative process.

An integrated events and RSVP system allows the club to publish meetings and other activities while tracking member attendance. Because meeting participation is an important requirement of club membership, the system provides administrators with a centralized way to monitor RSVPs and attendance rather than relying on separate spreadsheets or disconnected tools.

The website also serves as a centralized knowledge and resource platform for members. Aviation resources, operating information, checklists, reference materials, and other club documentation can be organized and maintained within Drupal, making important information easier for both current and future members to locate.

A dedicated Flight Instructors section gives instructors within the club their own presence on the website. Each instructor can highlight their experience, qualifications, specialties, and availability, helping members find the right instructor while giving participating CFIs another avenue for connecting with new students.

Backcountry Aero Club demonstrates how Drupal can extend well beyond traditional content management. By combining public-facing marketing and SEO with membership applications, CRM functionality, financial workflows, event management, attendance tracking, and structured aviation resources, the site operates as both the club's public website and an internal operational platform—all while remaining intentionally straightforward for the volunteers who will maintain it in the future.
